Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Periodontal or gum disease is a serious inflammatory disorder that will harm the bone and surrounding tissues of the teeth. Gingivitis is the initial stage of gum disease. With treatment we can; significantly alter the progression of the disease, help prevent further disease and even reverse some of the damage done. Without treatment premature tooth loss will occur. However, the picture may be much bigger. Periodontal disease which is a serious inflammatory disorder, primarily caused by bacterial pathogens (disease causing bacteria present in dental plaque ), these aspects of periodontal disease may have a detrimental impact on other common serious systemic diseases or conditions. Unfortunately, the early stages of Periodontal disease are usually symptomless and by the time one of the warning signs are recognizable by the patient the disease may have already reached a severe or advanced level. Professional evaluation is critical to early detection and treatment.

Risk factors of periodontal disease include:

  • Poor dental hygiene
  • Smoking or chewing tobacco
  • Poor nutrition
  • High levels of stress
  • Diabetes
  • Down Syndrome
  • AIDS
  • Certain medications including steroids, oral contraceptives or blood pressure medication
  • Fillings or crowns with deep grooves or poor contouring
  • Genetics: Children who have parents with periodontitis are 12 times more likely to have the bacteria that can lead to periodontal disease.

Diagnosis

A periodontal examination is a fundamental part of all dental examinations and is the first step in ensuring healthy gums. We will fully examine your mouth for signs of the disease.

Treatments

Full Mouth Reconstruction

Gum Disease Treatments

Gum disease can be treated by a general dentist or a periodontist, a specialist who undergoes additional training after obtaining a dental license. If your dentist/periodontist discovers gum disease, we can provide treatment for every stage of the condition, which may include:

  • Prophylaxis (teeth cleaning)
  • Scaling and root plane
  • Gum surgery
  • Bone grafting
Dental Implants and Implant Dentures

Surgical Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal surgery may be necessary to manage moderate to severe periodontitis. This includes pocket reduction with or without bone grafting. All surgical procedures are performed by Dr. D’Aniello. It can be done predictably with local anesthesia only. In addition, preoperative oral sedation is an option for apprehensive patients at no additional fee.

Aesthetic Surgical Treatment (Cosmetic Dentistry)

To improve aesthetics due to a “gummy smile” or uneven gumline. Cosmetic periodontal surgery also includes gum grafting or augmentation to cover an exposed root surface that is prone to root decay and/or sensitivity.

In many cases, gum surgery can be deferred or avoided if the patient is referred to Dr. D’Aniello in a timely manner.

Dental Implants

Dr. D’Aniello is an experienced dental implant surgeon. A dental implant is a titanium alloy screw that can safely and predictably be placed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth. If indicated, multiple implants can be utilized to replace several teeth or to secure a loose removable denture. The implant serves as the root portion to support the abutment and cap or crown placed by your general or restorative dentist. It is now accepted that a dental implant is often the most conservative treatment for tooth replacement.

Dental implants preserve the supporting bone and are an excellent alternative to fixed bridgework and removable partial dentures. Dr. D’Aniello has placed root form implants since 1987 with a success rate of approximately 99%. Pre-operative planning, bone quality and quantity, and surgical technique are key factors for optimal results. In many cases, the implant can be placed immediately after the extraction of a hopeless tooth. In addition, a special computerized CT scan may be necessary to properly assess your anatomical structures. If so, this can be done safely, conveniently and affordably so as to provide Dr. D’Aniello with more complete diagnostic information. In summary, dental implants are predictable, cosmetic and can last a long time or even a lifetime.

How do you pick a periodontist? I asked for recommendations from 3 dentists and they all enthusiastically directed me to Dr. D'Aniello...and they were right! He has great skills, a gentle touch, and a thoughtful approach. In the last couple years, I have had 3 implants and felt fully informed and confident throughout. His office expertly coordinated with my orthodontist (OrthoPros-5 stars) and regular dentist (Dr. Daggett-5 stars). His follow-up and attention to my care were beyond my expectations.
